Synopsis:
Have you ever wondered:

  • Why people refuse to heed perfectly reasonable warnings?
  • Why emergency notifications don’t happen as planned - despite all your training and exercises?
  • Why crisis leaders tend toward unwarranted optimism, downplaying risk and ignoring subject matter experts?

Crisis management and business continuity have long been grounded in the science of plans, processes, and programs. Responses would go great if only people would just follow those, right? But as long as our professions have been around, we’ve been missing the elusive "Y" factor of response – the variable that impairs both planning and response. We’ve focused on the "science" but largely ignored the "art." And that ‘art’ is people - and the way we all make choices, often at a subconscious level. Of more than 180 known cognitive biases several dozen crop up repeatedly in our responses – from normalcy bias to the overconfidence effect.

In this session we’ll unpack a few of them and explore:

  • How our subconscious mind makes decisions based on our experiences that we then act out consciously
  • How we can anticipate and influence what decisions people are likely to make based on how situations are presented to them
  • How to control, counter or curve the effect of these common biases/li>
